The purpose of this study is to investigate aspects of the allegorical technique embodied in a method of literary creation in modern Korean novels, and thus to explicate their characteristics. To fulfill this purpose, I analyze full-length novels presented in the 1970s, the reason of which is that they are texts appropriate to comparison and contrast for the characterization of the principles of allegory. I think that Choi In-hun’s Typhoon and Yi Chong-jun’s This Paradise of Yours are novels with such properties.
Allegory is a technique of literary creation which basically uses the ambiguity of sign or of interpretation. For the dual interpretation, allegory constructs a virtual space of the secondary meaning, which is clearly distinct from the primary meaning. It is figuration that works as the principle of the construction of the space. The figuration is divided into metaphor and metonymy. In general, the former is supposed to be based on similarity, and the latter on contiguity. Applying this principle to actual works, we find out that the allegorical space is established by metaphor in Typhoon, and that it is constructed by metonymy in This Paradise of Yours. The reason why the metaphorical construction of the allegorical space is distinguished from the metonymic construction is that the novels using either of them method have different orientation respectively.
The results of this study include the fact that the use of the allegorical technique in novel writing is closely related to contemporary situations of the time when a novel was presented, that there are differences in the establishment of the allegorical space with the writer’s intention and its effects, and that the allegorical space by metaphor aims at universality, and that by metonymy is directed to objectivity.
