This study aims at trying to explore Gogol’s early enigmatic work, “Ivan Fedorovich Schpon'ka and His Aunt” from the perspectives of melancholy and allegory. Melancholy is considered Gogol’s inborn disposition and the dominant mental symptom of Baroque culture, whose Ukrainian variant serves as the cultural basis for young Gogol. And allegory which is related to melancholy in the light of both Baroque culture and psychoanalysis can be characterized as the discrepancy between significant and signifie.
In this work both aspects of allegory are mixed with each other in the grotesque figuralization of characters and metonymy and rhetorical cliche. All characters may be interpreted into allegorical figures who represent abstract concepts from the viewpoint of original meaning and usage of allegory, such as timidity and authoritarianism. And the narrator's apparently naive and simple words permeated with irony produces the effect of ambiguousness and polysemy from the viewpoint of allegorical interpretation. Finally, metonymy serves as a constructional and stylistic device, especially in Schpon’ka’s dream and grotesque description of human body’s parts, and the rich rhetoric cliches of Baroque and Classicism enhance the grotesque comicality of this text. Therefore, this work can be interpreted as a complex allegorical body with multidimensional interactions.
This study could serve as a first step for the exploration of the possibility to interpret the Gogol’s all works from the perspectives of melancholy and allegory, especially his final ambitious project of the creation of the nineteenth century's version of Christian epic.
