The real is such a world that have to expose and it is the world that have been taboo for Choi In-hoon. He defined the modernity as ‘the idea of negation’. Such idea of negation is located in his literary works. When direct representation(in case of The square) becomes difficult for him, then he represents it in indirect way or allegorically. He applied the method of direct representation of that time somewhat in The Grey Man. In other words, he expressed the incident of Progressive Party and the mischief of pro-Japanese group during the First Republic, and he expressed reality about the ideological war between South and North through broadcasting after the partition. This is his own form of resistance.
However, he contrasted the virtual reality by setting up the fantastic space in the Journey to the West. That is the method of preceding the appropriate reality, as well as the aim of virtual reality which transcends the real reality. In this work, he presented a capital punishment of Cho Bong-am, invited Nongae and Yi Sun-shin from our history, and indicated ‘The voice of Joseon’ and ‘The voice of the government of Shanghai’ etc. Those are also pursue of appropriate reality through the fantasy. The reality transcendence have significance to which fantasy and Ideology are overwhelming. For him, he had such a world in which he couldn’t accept the reality as it is, or even so he could not exclude it. Choi In-hoon imagined through the method of figuration and abstraction by maintaining a certain distance and combined two extreme which is known as realityl/fantasy or realism/modernism. Therefore, his literature became an opportunity to develop modernism arts one step ahead.
