In this article, an estimation of the ownership condition of the peasants(total of 13,588 of them) and their engagement in agricultural production in a particular area at a specific time period is attempted, based upon analyses of the Yangan(量案 land-ownership registers) from total of 15 Myeon local units inside the Jinchun-Gun area. In that regard, it can be argued that this article contains the results of a research that has been conducted upon the level of Gun and Hyeon local units for the first time.
The characteristic of the internal divergence of the peasantry population revealed by the Yangan registers of the Jinchun-Gun area could be labelled as 'polarization', showing some of them ascending inside the social structure and some of them descending. And by examining the percentage of those shifting population inside the entire pool, we can see that more of them were descending rather than ascending. Lower class, poor peasants who only owned 0.5 Jeongbo units of a land or even smaller ones occupied 75 percent of the entire peasantry population, while the percentage occupied by the richer ones who owned lands with the size above 1.5 Jeongbo units & below 5, or who owned lands with the size above 5 Jeongbo units, respectively showed to be 4.8% and 3.2%.
Aspects of the land ownership of the poor peasants at the bottom of the social structure(75%) show that they were having diverse occupations and their engagements in agricultural production were in many cases secondary or at least not primary. In cases of the landlords, although they often had lands throughout over 10 different Myeon units, it seems that they were trying to upgrade their management by purchasing and managing lands located near to each other inside a certain region. Lee Gyeong Pal, who was the biggest and most powerful landlord in the Jinchun-Gun area, could be the prime example demonstrating such kind of intentions. But most of the Absentee Langlords(不在地主) rather ended up proving inefficient, as the lands owned by them were too scattered across the peninsula.
Other documents or sources should be searched for in the future, in order to establish a more developed studies of local history.
