Esther has been considered as an angelic figure who represents Dickens's ideal woman, "the Angel of the House". However, Dickens represents her ideal female virtues ironically, by showing her as an obsessed angel of the house with a psychological trauma from her illegitimate birth and also desperate desire to be accepted by conventional society.
Dickens tries to intimate that Esther's obsession with her worthiness has resulted not only from her personal psychological reasons but from the self-consciousness of her own femininity in a society especially oppressive to women. In other words, Dickens insinuates that her attitude as an ideal woman is a kind of strategy of survival as a woman.
Dickens also reveals that Esther's obsession with praises reflects her unconscious desire to remain in the category of the middle class women by transforming her work as Jarndyce's housekeeper into "emotional labor." Thus, Dickens effectively criticizes the woman ideology of the Victorian middle class, by showing that Esther is not satisfied but. obsessed with the ideal of the angel of the house.
Dickens presents Esther not as an asexual angel of the house but as a new mature woman who has her own desire to love and be loved. Rejecting proposals by Guppy and Jarndyce who seek their own interests without considering her feelings as a woman, Esther finally acquires her own emotional identity in the marriage based on love with Allen.
