On the face of it, there is no common denominator between Darwin's The Origin of Species and Dickens' Great Expectations because the former is a scientific monograph concentrating on objective facts and the latter a novel simulating subjective human emotion. An evolutionism was the ethos in Victorian society, however, it may not be unfruitful to search for the possibility that basic ideas of evolutionism had been absorbed into the works of Dickens. Besides diachronic and synchronic coincidences (Victorian England) between the two works, Dickens' deep involvement in All the Year Round made possible his understanding of the notions of evolution and those notions' assimilation into his imaginary world.
Great Expectations as well as The Origin of Species is a story of revelation. Both reveal the hidden history of their characters. Dickens in the novel reveals the secret of Pip's birth, which resembles The Origin of Species revealing the history of biological origins. Also in this novel, Dickens shows how much the past affects the present through Pip, which reminds us of Darwin's idea of evolution by natural selection. Dickens argues, however, that if environment can mould some one, there is always, hopefully, the possibility that change may come about through improved physical surroundings and personal influence.
While Darwin is interested in the competition for survival between species in nature, Dickens is interested in the personal and social cooperation that is necessary for survival in human society. In this matter, although the two maestros had a lot in common, we find the difference between the artist who wants to suggest an alternative for human society and the scientist who wants to revel the rules controlling nature.
