As suggested in Aristotle's poetics and rhetoric, style serves two supplementary and conflicting purposes, ontological and aesthetic. Language, as the system of arbitrary and non-motivated signs in origin, should be geared and integrated into the world of things through the adoption of appropriate styles. While fulfilling this ontological demand, ideal style should engender pleasure too. Until late in the eighteenth century, the division of genres according to social classes of characters as well as the norm of decorum guaranteed these two stylistic demands to be satisfied. But the socially mediated happy marriage of ontology and aesthetics in style, which may be called social aesthetics, was annulled by the French Revolution. As such, French Revolution brought to an end common style, thus leaving Romantic poets helplessly in the stylistic vacuum. But the positive side of it is reflected in experiments of style, the most prominent example of which is Wordsworth poetry. He attempted to replace the social aesthetics by ontological aesthetics, socially stratified language by the primitive language of the sense, diegesis by mimesis. This paper proposes to investigate into the nature of Wordsworth's experiment of style, focusing on the triple layered relation between thing, language, and style, while tracing Coleridge's criticism made on that experiment from a conservative and traditionalistic perspective.
