This study elaborates on Michael: A Pastoral in which new changes in the economy of contract and negotiable instruments in the early period of capitalism replace alternative social mechanisms such as local customs and familial morality. In the transitional period from feudalism to capitalism, main characters experience various contexts represented by the meanings of “Bond.” Demonstrating the characters who experience the separation of the ownership of estate gained through their industry, Michael is a tragedy which depicts a shepherd family caught within the changes of the day.
Michael as an example of industry once guided his community. At the beginning of the narrator's explanation, marital and familial integration seems to be wholly connected to life of industry. His reality or existence was embedded in his community's perception of him. However, his inability to keep his promise and to execute his contract with his son, Luke, finally excludes him from his community. He should live through hardships of life and failure of his son. His son's failure in the city drives him to despair. The estate representing Michael's aspirations ultimately goes into a stranger's hand.
