The purpose of this article is to examine postcolonial aspects appearing in The Moonstone. Though he had worked and lived in the Victorian Era, Wilkie Collins despised the political, and social view of his contemporaries that looked down upon other cultures, especially their attitude towards the culture of India. While the Indian Mutiny in 1857 was caused by misunderstanding between two cultures of England and India, the outcome of this could also to be traced back to the racial hatred in England towards India. Within this cultural atmosphere many books were published from the 1860's to 1900.
Unlike the other books published in the same era, The Moonstone shows postcolonial aspects in it. In his book Collins employs a special narrative technique that makes use of various narrators. Each narrator tells his/her story in succession to his/her former narrator. This technique where some narrators disclose the secrets kept in former narration weakens the very authority of the narrator and casts some skepticism to the dominant atmosphere of racial hatred towards India.
Another interesting postcolonial aspect is Collins's critical viewpoint to Betteredge's affection to Robinson Crusoe. A white man who comes to live in an island inhabited by others, Robinson Crusoe insisted on continuing his European lifestyle. When Crusoe frees Friday from other black natives, he even insists on converting him to his own European ways. Collins mocks Crusoe and his colonial mentality behind his "taming" of Friday. In other words, Collins seems to criticize the colonialist attitudes of England towards other cultures by mocking Betteredge.
