With the publication of Darwin's The Origin of Species in 1859, the idea of evolution spread into all fields of Victorian society including literary works. The idea of Evolution was summarized into three phrases, 'survival of the fittest,' 'struggle for existence,' 'the natural selection.' This was the ethos of the Victorian Era while the British Empire, armed with evolution theory, reached its apex of power.
Distorted ideas on evolution were easily found in the novels for teenagers like The Coral Islands and Solomon's Mines, and scientific novels like The Island of Mr. Moreau. The protagonists in these novels act like the supermen to whom the privilege to conquer or transform the land/animals on the islands are given. The attitudes of these heroes of the novels show that the English readers of the Victorian Era did not realize how distorted this view really was. The English readers did not seem to care about the fact that evolution theory was used distortedly in politics of the British Empire. Therefore, we can easily suppose that in that period the power of British Empire was declining, so the English readers wanted the fictional imaginary to be filled with their patriotism.
