This article examines a Chinese communist revolutionary process in relations with the local socal structure through the Xiaodaohui(Small Sword Society) case. The Xiaodaohui, a local secret society in the Northern Jiangsu, represented a protective armed forces for the autonomous local power since the late 1920s when the Guomindang(GMD) government made attempt to infiltrate its influence into this local society. The Xiaodaohui entered into the "struture du repli" as the GMD regime was stabilized around the mid-1930s. Then it revitalized its activities in the new anarchic situation caused by Sino-Japanese war.
The Chinese communist revolution which started with the advent of communist regular army from outside in this region in the mid-1940 inevitably encountered strong resistance from the Xiaodaohui. This is to say, the major enemy of the Communist was neither the GMD nor Japanese army, but the autonomous local power represented by Xiaodaohui. The Communist success would depend on how it could treat with this local power. The resistance of Xiaodaohui meant that without destructing the local power the communist power base could not have settled down in the village. After all, the communist determined to adopt a merciless military suppression against the Xiaodaohui. But the latter was not completely clamped down but managed to survive to some extent on the local scene. This fact explains the weakness of the communist power during the war. Hereafter the Xiaodaohui forces would reappear in the local politics during the civil war and again in the early 1950s.
This article shows that the rise of Chinese communist power and the revolutionary process was closely related with the local social structure. It derives partly from the fact that the Chinese revolution was not a well-coordinated work of the Central Committee of the Party but a diverse localized process. It can be said that this local diversity depends on local social structure rather than on the communist tactics as a whole. The crucial factors that influenced the communist revolutionary process was whether there was local autonomous power or not in a certain society, and whether there was solidarity or not in a local society. This perspective perhaps has a certain risk of oversimplification, but it might, I hope, contribute to the understanding of the diversity of Chinese communist revolution.
