This paper examines the negative impact of irregular employment, particularly temporary work, on trade union membership. Temporary work is associated with wide range of negative consequences, over and above its detrimental effect on trade union membership. The wage level, working conditions, employment security, voluntary job seeking, job satisfaction, subscription to social insurances, and application of the statutory labour standards are all negatively influenced by temporary work. This paper finds that the pronounced extent of discrimination and employment insecurity, and exclusion from social insurances and trade union membership that has been characteristic of workers in irregular employment, does not merely stem from their status as "part-time worker", "labour hire worker", "outsourcing employee", but from the pervasive impact of the temporary nature of their employment. Their conditions are determined by their being "temporary part-time worker", "temporary labour hire worker", and "temporary outsourcing employee". The findings of this paper highlights the foremost need to curtail the abuse of temporary employment and enhancing the security of period of contracted employment in order to eliminate some of the most glaring negative consequences of irregular employment. At the same time, this paper identifies a trade union imperative to develop a double-pronged strategy of "organizing model" and "social pact politics" in its effort to bring about an improvement in the union density.
