Taiping guangji is a treasury of ancient China’s novel. The text was published in Taizong six year(981) of Song dynasty. The text seemed to be transmitted to Goryo dynasty of Korea in 1080 or thereabouts.
Taiping guangji which had been published in Song dynasty was treasured up within the Royal court at fifteenth century. And it was a great volume. These causes made Seong Im feel uneasy to use books. Taepyung gwanggi sangjeol in fifty volumes were published by Seong Im who made an extract and edit from the Taiping guangji with a critical view in 1462. With this as a turning-point, Taepyung gwanggi sangjeol could be widely read by the readers who had needed Taiping guangji in Joseon dynasty.
Taepyung gwanggi sangjeol was characterized by selecting sentences. It had relatively low proportion of selection in the part of Taoism and Buddhism, but on the other hand it had high ratio of extraction in the part of an anecdote and a fictionalized biography. Furthermore, there were six stories more in the category of Taepyung gwanggi sangjeol in comparison with extant Taiping guangji. At the present time, six stories that handed down in Taepyung gwanggi sangjeol are precious datum which can fulfill leaving behind of Taiping guangji after Tan Kai’s text.
It is a matter of common knowledge that Taiping guangji exercised a far-reaching influence upon an epic literature in Joseon dynasty. By the way, it was unnoticed that the readers actually read Taepyung gwanggi sangjeol at that time. Now, It is appropriate that we set high value on Taepyung gwanggi sangjeol’s merits to the history of Korean literature.
