This study investigated and analyzed the epitaph tablets(墓誌) in Chungbuk National University (CBNU) Museum located in Cheongju, Chung Buk.
An epitaph is of course the brief history of a dead person to be buried with him or her in a tomb. The content of an epitaph includes the family lineage, name, place of the family register, life history, dates of birth and death, offsprings and a dedicatory verse.
In Korea, ancient epitaph preserved today are extremely scarce. Koryo(918-1392) tombs have produced 320 of stone epitaphs, and during the Yi Dynasty, placing epitaphs become an established practice among above-the-middle-class people.
The epitaph Tablets can be divided into several types according to dividing methods of them, but in this paper, Epitaph Tablets are devided into three types by materials of them: stoneware(石製), earthenware(土製), and porcelain(磁器製). In Koryo Dynasty, stoneware is chiefly used for the materials of Epitaph Tablets, but in Yi Dynasty, according to the development of technique of producing the white porcelain (白磁), stoneware is, generally, substituted for porcelain.
The main goal of this study was to examine the epitaphs and provide accurate descriptions of their content, rather than to examine them archeologically. It was found that the tablets consisted of 10 porcelain, 9 earthenware, and 1 stoneware tablet, all from the Yi dynasty period. It was also found that they belonged to 20 different people. The genders of the 20 people were identified as follows: 13 males, 5 females, 1 couple, and 1 unidentifiable.
These Epitaph Tablets have two kinds: one is inscribed and the other is written. For the former materials, stoneware or earthenware is mainly used and for the latter, porcelain is mainly used.
In the late Yi Dynasty, formalized Epitaph Tablets are discovered more than the various style of them, and materials of stoneware are less used and simplified. Also common people's earthenware Epitaph Tablets are often found. This reflects the decline of using the Epitaph Tablets and formalization of them.
