In a remarkably short period of time, environmental issues have become a prominent.
element in world trade negotiations. As with transboundary and global pollution. national gorvenments acting alone are unable to control the environmental effects of trade. marking international cooperation essential. Yet despite the many interactions between them. trade and environment have traditionally been seen as entirely separate domains in the international arena.
But nowadays, however, as environmental issues achieve a new prominence on the international agenda and increasingly bump up against trade agreements. the world is beginning to take note of the connections. Environmental issues have become a major feature of several ongoing trade negotiations. In the postwar era, free trade has sometimes been pursued as an end itself, rather than as a means to an end. This approach is beginning to give way, however, to the view that trade can be a tool for shaping a world that is ecologically sustainable and socially just.
Following the lull brought on by the economic disorders of the 1973-82 period double digit inflation and recession in the industrial countries and two world oil price shocks - there has been a second wave of public interest in environmental issues. This new wave is much more intense and more widespread in several dimensions.
Ozone depletion and global warming have emerged as major pollution issues, and the primary and service sectors are coming under as much scrutiny by environmentalists as the manufacturing sector. Issues in which personal values play an important role, such as species diversity and animal rights, also are increasingly becoming the subject of international debate and sources of friction between countries. In this paper, I want to study on the impact of environmental measures on international trade.
