This paper explores the implications for the pattern of international trade of differences among regions within cointries-what we call "lumpiness," If factors of production are sufficiently unevnly distributed across regions, then the pattern of trade of the country as a whole may depart from what it would have been had factors been evenly distributed. Thus Jimpiness in the geographical distribution of factors can be a determinant of trade, This paper show in particular that if other determinants of trade are absent, then a country will tend to export the good that intensively uses its lumpier(i.e" more unevenly distributed) factor.
International trade theory customarily assumes that countries are homogeneous entities. That is, trade thoery abstracts from geographical, intracountry differences in factor endowments, consumer incomes and tastes, access to technology and resources, and the conditions of the environment affecting both producers and consumers. Such differences are assumed either not to exist or not to matter, even though it is precisely these kinds of differences, when they arise among countries rather than within them, that give rise to trade itself.
