Recently, in Korea there. has been an increasing interest in adult education and in leisure rime management, caused primarily by the introduction of the five-day working week. With regard to this, a review of foreign cases can contribute to better understanding of the Korean situation. With this basic assumption, this article considers the Folk High School in Germany as an example of foreign adult education. The direct origins of German adult education go back to the
Reformation and the Enlightenment. In the 19th century, various organizations of adult education were developed as a result of rapid industrialization. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Folk High School was established and expanded rapidly. Nowadays it is regarded as the representative symbol of adult education in Germany. The Folk High School provides citizens with opportunities to gain and deepen their general, cultural and occupational education and knowledge, through various learning and activity programs. From the legal point of view, the Folk High School has the status of a registered union, which endeavors to contribute to the general public goal and thus is not profit-oriented. The Folk High School deals with its financial requirements through .the provision of various programs in many fields. It also depends On aids from outside, above all from the city and the province. The content of the education programme and the activities of the German Folk High School varies according to the demands at the time. Originally, the focus was on the enlightenment of the citizens, but recently vocational training has been in the forefront. In the vocational training of women the Folk High School also plays very important and leading role. Furthermore, leisure time management ;s one of its fundamental tasks. But must not be forgotten that the Folk High School still pursues the ideals of the Enlightenment concerning the development of the whole person. The image of independent and autonomous Man underlies the Folk High School ideals, even though nowadays it practises largely vocational training and leisure time management. With this combination of enlightenment and practical aims as well as personal and professional education, much might be learned from the Folk High School system in Germany by Korea.
