In this paper, I describe the Nakrang pottery vessels shards and examine their forms and making techniques.
Nakrang pottery are classified into three groups according to physical properties.
There are gray pottery, talcum pottery and quartz pottery.
Gray pottery was made from levigated clay.
Gray pottery include cylindrical cups, footed bowls, small bowls, small jars, steamers, vases and others.
Talcum pottery is brown or gray coarse pottery with a considerable amount of talcum particles. It contains cooking pot like tripods, plower pot style jars.
Quartz pottery is restricted to large jars.
Gray pottery contains tableware and storage vessels.
Major forming techniques of gray pottery were coiling and beating Cord-mark impressions on surface shows that cord wrapped beaters were used. Most of the anvil markings on the interior contain traces of natural annual rings of wooden anvils.
Talcum pottery contains cooking pots like tripods, flowerpot style jars. Talcum particles were probably added mainly in order to improve refractoriness. On the interior of the vessels, impressions of cloths are often found. This fact shows that the jars were formed on convex models wrapped by cloths.
Quartz pottery is restricted to large storage vessels. Faint traces on the surface show that the vessels of this type were formed by coiling and beating, and were smoothed on wheels.
