In commenting on The Old Man And Sea, many critics have been focused on such themes as stoicism, the spirit of fortitude of human beings and teligious themes. The Old Man And Sea povides us with very wide ecological perspectives of lives on the earth even though it has a very simple plot of a few days of an old fisherman.
This essay focuses on an ecological viewpoint of Santiago who has devoted himself on the Sea through his life. With empty hands, however, he shows his maternal love towards all the creatures in the world and his female-like patience to the end. Santiago recognizes Sea as a mother and he shows that he is not tied to the confines of patriarchal society and he shows his unorthodox attitudes towards small creatures on the earth and even his enemy, sharks.
The boy Manolin provides Santiago with all the nourishing energy. Santiago and the boy, Manolin are males bur they manifest themselves as female characteristics. Above all, Manolin keeps mothering and nuturing for the old man both spiritually and materially.
Hemingway presents his ecological recognition of unionship between man and all the other creatures on the earth through The Old Man And Sea.
