Since 1990, the plan to improve the backward educational environment which was partly influenced by economic development in Korea has started to construct modernized school buildings. Issuing open school theme from 1993, constructing modernized school buildings has spread over the whole country, But it is still in the situation that we do not clearly point out the advantages and disadvantages of open education.
Behavioral studies to accommodate open education have been continually done by some researchers. But field surveys in these researches have been performed in the condition of not open architectural spaces but standard planning classroom.
Moreover, we cannot yet see a research in which field survey is done in open planning space. Thus, the behavioral research in which case study is performed in open space classroom should be performed to evaluate the modernized school buildings that have been constructed so far.
This research is aimed to suggest behavioral patterns of open education in open space in Jang-an elementary school in Seoul that was constructed in 1996 as a first example of modernized school. This research concludes 1) the present architectural condition of the school building in terms of field survey, 2) analysis of actual use conditions in open planning classroom, and 3) an attitude analysis of teacher.
