YaStarting with Gapsinjeongbyeon, the Reform of 1884, Kim Ok-gyun tried to reform the Joseon Dynasty. However, Gapsinjeongbyeon failed in three days. Kim Ok-gyun exiled himself in Japan to gain power again. After the Osaka Event, the Japanese government considered him dangerous and exiled him co Ogasawara and Hokkaido. After he was released from exile, he was in danger of assassination by Korean killers. His trial to regain power failed, and he died an extraordinary death in Shanghai.
Traces of him are left in Korea and in other countries to commemorate him. First of all, the government designated his birch place and graves as memorials, and they are under the supervision of the government. At Wondeokri of Asan, where he spent his childhood, his housing site is preserved. His two graves in Japan are under the supervision of the Japanese. His failure of the reform not only put his parents and brother to death but also caused his wife and daughter co wander and beg for food. The graves of his parents and brother are in Jeonganmyeon, Gongju.
Meanwhile, Kim Ok-gyun left many calligraphy writings and learned a game of bad uk (go) from Suchiyashuei as a way of passing time as an exile. Kim showed a great talent in the game of baduk and became a friend of Suchiya to play the game. The 1886 Gibo, the complete record of a baduk game was known as the first Korean one. It showed how Kim Ok-gyun played a game with Suchiwa. Kim's style of playing baduk characterized as aggressive and change-seeking can serve as a good clue to his personaliry. While in Japan, Kim Ok-gyun strived to regain power unceasingly. Associating with important figures of Genyosha (玄洋社), he tried to get financial support from them. The paymenr for his writings were saved for money to gain power again. Even though he knew it might be the way to death, he decided to go to Shanghai to meet Li Hung-chang for his plan of regaining power. However, Kim Ok-gyun was impetuous. His thought of persuading Li Hung-chang was a miscalculation.
