Have you ever considered the relationship of calendars and time to post-apocalyptic eschatology? Calenders, by definition, are approximate and cultural variable. Time, in modern science, is relative. Post-apocalyptic is that which comes after the apocalpyse (or the end of or time). And eschatology, of course, is the study of the last days and the dawning of the new eschaton. One of the most fascinating contexts for such a discussion is in the highly developed tradition of Russian religious philosophy, particularly the thought of Nikolai Berdyaev (1874-1948). This essay is organized into four component parts: 1) the general sub field of apocalyptic eschatology; 2) the specialized field of Russian eschatology; 3) the concept of apocalyptic time in the Russian religious philosophy of Berdyaev; and 4) the question of whether a new Millennial consciousness is emerging in time and space.
In Russian apocalyptic eschatology, according to Nikolai Berdyaev (one of its chief interpreters), the world will end and be reborn; not in chronological time (kronos) but in existential time (kairos). Humanity, and the entire cosmos, will be transformed from within and restored without, to freedom and wholeness. The cosmic event will be prophetically creative and ethically responsible, and yet transcend historical time, for "the end of the world is man's responsibility as well as God's" (Berdyiev, Spirit and Reality, 1937). Another way to talk about it is Chardin's creative evolution of the Noosphere, resulting in social transformation and new global consciousness.
