The Donhwang Cave is located at the entrance contacting foreign civilization in China. Since it has a geological characteristic of 'a gateway of the exchange of civilization between Western coun- tries and Oriental', fortunately all the artistic, creative figures of the Joongwon Dynasty and many Westem countries regarding the culture of dress and its ornaments can be seen on the wall paintings in the Donhwang cave.
The purpose of this study is to review closely the transition of the trousers and skirts(裳ㆍ裙) of China expressed on the Donhwang fresco in which Chinese, traditional elements and foreign elements are mingled throughout a period from Ohosipyuk- kook(五胡十六國) to Nambukjo(南北朝).
Findings are as follows:
Those figure paintings on the Donhwang fresco show two kinds of dress styles mingled - Han(漢) dress style and Ho(胡;
Uncivilized aborigines who lived north of China or the Tumen river) dress style.
Since two old Chinese countries of Wi and Jin, the kind of skirt(裙) style was diversified; colors were abundant, putting
importance on omamen- talion as well; and the Chomungansaekkun(fIU)(條紋間色裙; the skirt showing various colored pat-terns) which was popular among women in those days can be also seen on the ancient tomb mural of Kokuryo (one of the old Korean counties) and on the excavated fresco of the Japanese Aska Ancient Tomb.
