The East and the West had various cultural interchanges in modern times, also affecting the clothing styles. In the 16th century, Korea was ruled by King, Europe by monarchy. Korea was a society of nobility, and Europe was one of aristocracy, which gave way to a civil society in the 17th century. It served as a new middle class which led clothing to spread upward, not downward.
This study reviews the similarities and the differences in the style and pattern making of women's skirts between the Joseon Dynasty and the European Monarchy.
First, in the 16th century, their skirts were long enough to touch the ground. Korean skirts were in natural silhouette, whereas western ones were stylized by fartingale.
econd, in the 17th century Korean skirts remained natural silhouette and western ones also had unartificial line influenced by the Danish. After Louis XIV came to the throne, the artificial eccentricities of the Renaissance revived.
Third, in the 18th century Korean skirts were puffed with the layers of several underclothes while western ones were stylized by paniers. Around 1785 Korean skirts were in a jar shape whereas western ones showed a bustle style puffed on the back side.
