This article surveys the following essential issues to be considered seriously for the establishment of Dangun Studies 檀君學 First, it is necessary to clarify the definition and existence of Dangun. In the 'Gojoseon' 古朝鮮 section of the Samguk yusa 三國遺事 , Dangun Wanggeom 檀君 王儉 and Dangun appear as a proper noun and a common noun, respectively. Dangun, a title of a ruler, is also called as Haemosu 解慕漱 which is a transliteration of "'Hae meoseuma" 해머슴아(a boy of sun or Son of Heaven). Since the reality of Dangun provides us with the basis for the existence of Dangun Joseon, we must study the issue seriously. Second, the places of Korean origin and its timing should be examined. Scholars proposed in the past that the Korean people were immigrated from Siberia, Central Asia or northeastern China. However, ancient Chinese texts and the archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century find the origins of the Korean people and their culture both in Manchuria and the Korean peninsula. We must change our preconception on the issue. Another important related problem is that there have been different ideas about the beginning of the Korean nation: Unified Silla, Goryo, after the modernization, and etc. However, recent studies have shown that the territory of Old Joseon included the Korean peninsula and the entire region of Manchuria. The people in the regions may have shared a common identity during the period which in turn led them to form a cultural and national community. Third, we must confirm the sense of value and identity of Korean people. "Hongik ingan" 弘益人間 (the devotion to the welfare of mankind or humanism) is the core of the Korean sense of value. Initiated at the time of Hwanung 桓雄 the ideology of "Hongik ingan" developed further in Old Joseon as its founding philosophy. The culture of Old Josoon is Soongyo 仙敎 which comprehends Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. This culture was succeeded by the following Korean states such as Goguryo, Baekje, and Silla. Fourth, the reality of Old Joseon and its founding date should be clarified. Scholars use the term, Old Joseon, differently designating only for Dangun Joseon or Wiman Joseon, and indicating all the three Joseon states (Dangun Joseon, Gija Joseon and Wiman Joseon). The founding date varies too: 2333 B.D., 3000 B.C., the tenth century B.C., and the third to fourth century B.C. Accepting the tenth or third to fourth century B.C. denies the existence of Dangun and Dangun Joseon. Finally, there is no agreement about the traditional Korean texts on Old Joseon such as the Hwandan gogi 桓檀 古記 and Gyuwon sahwa 揆園史話. Whereas some scholars trust their authenticity positively, others conclusively see the texts as forgeries and no doubt disregard them. The biographical and philological studies for the texts are needed to solve the problem. I propose these important issues with my own opinion, believing that the Association for Dangun Studies must discuss them further.
