This article reexamines the succession of relationships between sinocentrism and nationalism in terms of the historical notion of Dangun. For a long time, korean nationalism has been regarded as originating from the traditional historic notion of Dangun, because Dangun was always regarded as the symbol of political independence from China in the perspective of nationalism. But the historic meaning of the notion of Dangun is neither the same nor unique in Korean history. It had a somewhat political independence in the Goryeo period, but after the foundation of the Joseon dynasty, Dangun was thought of as the origin of the foundation of Dongguk, whereas Gija was regarded as the symbol of a Confucian civilization by which the people of Dongguk realized the virtue and moraity of men. In the second half of the Joseon Period, both Gija but Dangun were regarded as symbols of Confucian civilization, because the ruling class realized the necessity of retroaction of the origin of Confucian system in a changed world without the Ming dynasty. In this context, Dangun came to have the same historic meaning with Gija. Korean nationalism could be realized by revolutionary deconstruction of the historic meaning of Dangun in the second half of the Joseon Period. Korean nationalistic historians did not pay enough attention to the historic context of the notion of Dangun. They only used Dangun to consolidate Korean nationalism. There was a great difference between the historic meaning of Dangun in the second half of the Joseon Period and that of the modern period, similar to the difference between sinocentrism and nationalism.
