The aim of this paper is to examine the peculiarities of Roman family in the 1st century A.D.,not to say its transformation. It was thought that a Roman family had the form of the extended family which consisted of several conjugal families, and all members were subject to patria potestas. Contrary to the literary and legal concepts of familia and domus, the general character of Roman family seems to be 'mixtured-small-family' sub eo tecto, not a nuclear family as R. Saller said.
The stereotype image of legal authoritarianism of pater familias was mitigated more and more in the 1st century A.D. The husband-wife and parent-child relations implied reciprocal responsibility, affection and discord as in modern societies. The Romans became to know that the bases of the family are not only authority but also affection and devotion, more definitely 'love'. We can find the familial affection and devotion in the notion of pietas in the literary sources and more simple-direct expressions in inscriptions in the 1st century A.D. So I cannot but agree with the argumentations of P. Veyne.
The Roman family in the 1st century A.D. was small too. A form of large family was exceptional. This was to a large extent the result of disasters such as wars, epidemics, famines etc, not to say homosexuality and extra-marital relations and high infant mortality rate. But most of parents wanted to limit the number of their offsprings, to have, as we have seen, no more than one or two children. They had recourse to a variety of family-planning practices. In purpose these resemble those of our own age, but in application and also in frequency they are often quite different. most often we hear of exposure, less of abortion, least of all of contraception. This dose not mean that infanticide and exposure were the unique and most common form of family planning. Rather, its meaning is that we should not forget the practice attracted far more attention than contraception or even abortion.
