The purpose of this paper is to study the consciousness of death in the poetry of Park In-Whan not through the phases of the times, i.e., the outbreak of the Korean War and existentialism but through the psychoanalytical approach. And I deal with 'death' in a psychological way, not a biological one. This would be a very useful way of studies when we consider the fact that the poetic word 'death' was used before the outbreak of the war, that 'death' was not showed as something terrifying but as an aim to incline one's steps, and that a lot of his poetry which poetized 'death' is related with 'women' in the poetry of Park In-Whan.
Man has 'drive for death' that can demolish everything, while he (or she) has 'struggle for life' that tends to lead to the cohesive power and unity. There is a fundamental contrast between the two desires. In the poetry of Park In-Whan, 'death drive' is more saliently conspicuous. In the poems of [Something coming into question], [Until there is a living thing], [Mr. Mo's life and death], etc., the poet evinced the bitters of life and represented 'death' as 'bliss.' In these poems of him, death is presented as 'the realization of the superlative desire.'
On the other hand, in many of his poems, Park In-Whan related 'death' to 'women'. That is another counterexample of the fact that he concentrated all his energies on 'death drive.' In the poems of Park In-Whan, most of his works related to 'death' represent 'the images of woman' - bride, girl, prostitute, angel, lady, goddess, mother- and eroticism.
And these images of woman were considered as the projection of 'imaginary mother', that is already premised to his mind. In [A flight of 7 steps] the poet successfully reflected the desire of regression to maternity. Especially 'child' in this poem can be understood to mean 'imaginary phallus'. In this vein, I regard death drive as the nostalgia for the lost harmony, that is, a desire to return to the preoedipal fusion with the mother's breast. And then, the desire to return to the fusion with the mother's breast was expressed as death drive. Death in the works of Park In-Whan, I think, is the poetization of such desire.
