The transition to autonomous vehicles (AVs) reduces or removes the need for driver engagement, allowing users to focus on non-driving-related activities (NDRAs). However, AVs still need to communicate critical driving and safety information. Since NDRAs often demand visual attention, exploring non-visual modalities, is essential for effective information delivery and interaction. This study investigates the impact of three types of Auditory User Interfaces (AUI) on takeover performance and mental workload. The levels of explanation for takeover requests varied based on initial trust in automation (TiA). 20 participants (8 females, 12 males) were divided into two groups based on their initial trust levels. Each group experienced different auditory explanations for takeover requests during eight driving trials, conducting typing task in a driving simulator. Perceived mental workload and takeover reaction time were measured to compare the AUIs. Based on the results, we discussed performance differences among the AUI concepts by user groups.
