This study examines the semantic functions of the -dapsigo (-답시고) type of connective ending, which originated from quotative constructions. While -dapsigo conveys both ‘purpose’ and ‘reason’ as relational meanings, -rapsigo (-랍시고) and -japsigo (-잡시고) express only ‘purpose.’ Furthermore, these endings do not merely denote relational meanings but also reflect the speaker’s negative attitudes, such as the speaker’s distrust, sarcasm, and disapproval. This study interprets such negative attitudes within the framework of emotive modality and demonstrates that the-dapsigo type of connective ending incorporates the semantic property of reported evidentiality. The study also identifies key factors that trigger negative attitudes. In purposive constructions, -dapsigo is associated with ‘deceptive purposes,’ ‘highly improbable purposes,’ ‘presumptuous purposes,’ ‘inappropriate actions,’ and ‘negative outcomes.’ In causal constructions, it is linked to ‘false reasons,’ ‘unjustifiable reasons,’ and ‘negative outcomes.’ Finally, by distinguishing the syntactic status of NP+-(i)rapsigo and differentiating between the connective ending -irapsigo and the prepositional particle irapsigo, this study supplements previous research by addressing gaps in existing analyses.
