This study examines the challenges Korean learners face in acquiring English Non-agentive ES verbs (e.g., fear, envy), focusing on the influence of Korean psych-adjective constructions. In Korean, verbs equivalent to these English verbs (e.g., musewe hata,“to fear”) are often derived from adjectives (e.g., musepta, “to be afraid of”), where the subject functions as a non-agentive Experiencer. This similarity between the subjects of Korean psych adjective constructions and English Non-agentive ES verbs may lead learners to misinterpret these English verbs as adjectives, causing difficulties in adopting the SVO structure required in English (e.g., I fear tigers). Using a picture-matching judgment task and a translation task on 34 Korean learners, the study found a moderate positive correlation between interpretation tendencies and acceptability ratings (r = 0.402, p ＜ .001). Learners who interpreted Non-agentive ES verbs adjectivally assigned lower acceptability ratings, while verbal interpretations were associated with higher ratings. These findings demonstrate that interpreting English Non-agentive ES verbs as adjectives hinders learners’ ability to acquire their appropriate syntactic structures.
