Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the metaphorical expressions that early childhood teachers associate with the image of “infants” and examine how they perceive infants, who are co-agency who share everyday life experiences in the classroom. Methods: To achieve this purpose, this study analyzed metaphorical expressions about infants as well as descriptions of the reasons behind these expressions, which were collected from 270 teachers working in kindergartens and child care centers across the nation. Here, the procedures of metaphor analysis were used, which is an effective method for conveying the implicit meanings of personal thoughts of early childhood teachers in metaphorical expressions and examining the collective thought system regarding the image of “infants” by analyzing the frequency of keywords. Results: As a result of the data analysis, infants were classified into “mature beings in need of an environment,” “beings that have a positive influence on their environment,” “beings that are needed for future society,” and “beings that are the professional focus of teachers.” More specifically, they were perceived as “beings with unique traits,” “beings that are influential,” “the beginning and foundation of education,” “support for a safe environment,” “beings that grow,” “beings influenced by the environment,” “beings that explore,” “beings with potential,” “unpredictable beings,” “beings in need of protection and care,” “beings with a sense of agency,” “beings that experience positive/negative emotions,” “future human resources,” and “changes due to the Integration of Early Childhood Education and Care.” Conclusions: Based on these results, this study provides the following implications. In the context of teacher training for the Integration of Early Childhood Education and Care, it is necessary to shift to an educational approach where early childhood teachers perceive infants not only as beings they must take care of but as competent beings living happy lives, and to conduct further research to reveal the existence of “infants.”
