Self-efficacy is one’s perceived capabilities to achieve a certain task and has been identified as a critical success factor for athletes. The purpose of this study is to detail the process and examine the effectiveness of a self-efficacy theory based long-term intervention for a male elite gymnast experiencing crises. Using a case study, single-case holistic design approach, the intervention program was formed into four phased stages based on the athlete’s progress. Self-efficacy sources were targeted at each stage to restore and increase his self-efficacy, which facilitated his process of cognitive and physical recovery from crises. Complex cause-effect results indicate that each approach to restore and increase his self-efficacy ultimately led him to find his own optimal concentration strategy, which was to refine his pre-performance routine for competitions. Preparing an original tool to cope with distracted situations seemed to enhance his self-efficacy, which in turn, was related to positive performance results.
