God created human beings with five senses. In the Old Testament, God is described as a being with five senses, just like human beings. God sees, hears, eats, touches, and smells. Human beings worship and commune with God with their five senses. This sensual intimacy is unique to human beings among God’s creatures. Other creatures also have five senses, but their relationship to God is not as intimate as that of human beings. Of these five senses, visual and auditory senses are often encountered throughout the Old Testament, but other senses not frequently. Does the Hebrew Bible really emphasize visual and auditory senses, but ignore other senses?
In this article, we will take a closer look at the portraits of olfactory sense among five senses in the Hebrew Bible. Also, we will try to examine whether such depictions are properly expressed to modern readers. The Hebrew Bible contains many expressions of God’s or human beings’ olfactory sense than we might expect, but they tend to be undelivered to or ignored by the readers of the translated versions. This may be due to the fact that modern people neglect olfactory sense over other senses. Compared to other senses, olfactory sense is difficult to obstruct or deceive. Thus, the Hebrew Bible frequently describes using olfactory sense as a means of judgment or selection of God or human beings. Therefore, it cannot be overemphasized that when reading the Hebrew Bible, we should pay attention to olfactory sense and the expressions associated with it.
