This paper analyzes Britomart’s modes of reading with a special focus on the relation between the viewing subject and the viewed object. Britomart encounters more images than any other character in The Faerie Queene. The intertextualized images that she faces are self-referential to varying degrees and dynamically engage her in the meaning-making process. Perceptive as she may be, Britomart is by no means an unaffected or objective reader. Rather, she finds herself on the verge of losing a critical distance from intricate images, blurring the boundaries between the subject and the object. Having a close look at three scenes in which reading is pivotal in the formation of Britomart’s subjectivity, this paper argues that she makes meaningful predictions about herself as she forms fluid relationship with the visual objects that influence her self-awareness.
