The purpose of this study is to learn about the epistemological status and concept of ‘the zero degree of writing’ proposed by Roland Barthes and to examine the characteristics of semiology thinking. This paper was written with reference to Barthes book, Le degré zéro de l’écriture, and his various writings. His concept of ‘writing degree zero’ can be found throughout his other books published later. We first looked at the ways in which institutionalized writing limits human thinking. Like other myths established in society, mythologized writing serves not only as a writer's writing, but also as a rule of language and serves as a norm for communication among members of society. Next, we sought to define the concept of writing degree zero more clearly through the term ‘utopia’ that appears throughout Barthes writings. As we identified the concepts of writing zero degree and utopia, we also saw that these concepts were not defined in themselves, but rather as a negative area that opposed mythologized writing.
