Madangkuk was reinterpreted in the 1960s through the talchum revival movement, and was developed mainly in the popular culture movement from the 1960s to the 1980s. At that time, freedom of expression was greatly restricted, and the people resisted unjust power that suppressed human equality and rights through the folk culture movement covering all aspects of culture and art, including Madangkuk, based on the recognition that the people are the subject. Madangkuk spread to Korean and Japanese society in Japan in 1981 when “Talchum and Madangkuk” was published in Japan. This book became a catalyst for the spread of the concept of Madangkuk in Japan, leading to the performance of <Arirang>, the first Madangkuk by Zainichi, in November 1982. The Madangkuk <Arirang> was created by second- and third-generation Koreans living in Japan, and depicts the history and present of their home country and the country they live in, as well as the conflict and harmony of Zainichi. This means that the Madangkuk was the most appropriate way to express and overcome the realities of discrimination and assimilation in Japanese society, loss of identity, and division of the Korean community in Japan by Zainichi. From the development of this cultural movement among Zainichi, we can see the potential for a new culture among Zainichi.
