This paper focuses on a legend from the Sakhalin indigenous peoples, i.e., the Nivkh (Gilyak), Ainu, and Uilta (Orok). This legend refers to a conflict between the Ainu and Uilta that is said to have occurred in the so-called Taraika region, the central-eastern part of the island, presumably in the 18th century. The legend of the ‘Taraika Conflict’ has been handed down by each of the three ethnic groups, and the number of documents including the contents is relatively large. In this paper, attempts are made to comprehend the legend of the Taraika Conflict by reviewing and comparing the documents and adding some considerations, including related information obtained through some linguistic field studies conducted by the present author in 2013-2014. When using a linguistic approach to get as close as possible to the viewpoints of the legend’s narrators, its contents become concrete and realistic.
