This study examined the trends in artificial intelligence (AI) research in the field of education from 2016 to 2023, focusing on the three paradigms of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED): AI-directed, AI-supported, and AI-empowered. Through a comprehensive review of literature spanning from 2016 to 2023, the classification and trends of AIED research were analyzed. Within the AIED paradigms, the AI-supported paradigm predominated, with 75 out of 100 examined papers classified under this category. Subsequently, the study categorized AIED into domains for teachers, learners, and assessment. Within the AI-supported paradigm, over 90% of the studies addressed learner-targeted AI models. The study further classified learner-targeted AI models based on the four variables: education level, education population, disciplines, and outcome measures. These research findings underscore the growing interest and significance of AI-supported research in the field of education, elucidating the potential future directions of AIED research and its implications for educational practice.
