This thesis is a person study that studied the life and pastoral activities of evangelist Son Hye-ok. Son Hye-ok got married at the age of 16, and two years later, she became a widow with a son. Then, in 1959, she graduated from Gyeongju Bible Academy and served at the Homyeong Church and Guryongpo Church. Then, she pioneered the Nodang Prayer Center and served for 10 years. Although she became seriously ill, she persisted in her ministry. She excelled in child education and thorough faith training. The kyongdong Presbyterian Church approved Son Hye-ok as a pioneer of the Dangu Prayer Center. Son Hye-ok served at the Dangu Prayer Center for the next 10 years and grew into a Dangu Church.
When the Dangu Church became a formal church, Son Hye-ok could no longer stay as a minister. The Presbyterian Church of Korea(Tonghap) did not allow women to ordain until 1995. Son Hye-ok could not become the pastor and chairman of the church she founded, and had to leave the position of pastor to a male pastor who was succeeded. Looking back, there must have been a lot of people in the Korean church, such as evangelist Son Hye-ok. Because they were preachers, they could not leave their names on the official record, but their ministry became a valuable foundation for the Korean church today.
In the future, microscopic and character studies on female pastors of Korean churches should be expanded. These are people who belonged to the entire history before the female ordination of the Integrated Church of the Presbyterian Church of Korea was allowed, and they hardly appeared in the official records. Their precious stories will have to be secured through oral history. In addition, research on female pastors should be continued to be discovered and studied as stories of Korean churches. Furthermore, we hope that this paper will contribute to improving the reality, treatment, and perception of female pastors in Korean churches.
