In this paper, we discuss a possible classification for Brazilian Venetan, also known as Talian: a linguistic phenomenon developed and employed by Italian immigrants and their descendants in the southern region of Brazil. Brazilian Venetan is the result of the continuous contact between distinct languages and varieties brought from Italy to Brazil in addition to Brazilian Portuguese. Therefore, Brazilian Venetan is a linguistic phenomenon born and developed due to language contact, and to just acknowledge it as, for instance, one of the several dialects of standard Italian doesn’t seem adequate to describe it. Thus, our main focus here is to seek more suitable sociolinguistic definition(s) for this linguistic manifestation.
