This study analyzes the text of Vita B of Theodore Stoudite to determine its political context. Research on Byzantine hagiography from the eighth and ninth centuries has mainly focused on the works produced in the Patriarchate of Constantinople by intellectuals. However, other hagiographical texts and their historical contexts have not been sufficiently analyzed. Some scholars argue that the narrative of Vita B of Theodore Stoudite reproduced Methodios’ lost hagiography of Theodore, although the author should use other materials, such as oral tradition of Stoudite monks and Theodore’s letters. To what extent does Vita Bcontain original elements? To answer the question, this study focuses on three points. The first, the characteristic of narrative of Vita B. The second, the description of Nikolaos Stoudites. The three, the author’s claiming about the relationship between patriarch Nikephoros and Theodore. By examining these three, this study argues that Michael, the author of Vita B of Theodore Stoudite, made some addition to the narrative of Methodios, to emphasize Theodore as the founder of Stoudios Monastery, and Nikolaos Stoudite as his great successor. Stoudios Monastery would be made own historical narrative from the existing patriarchal historiography.
