This study aims to understand the influence of parental relationships, parenting attitude, and self-esteem perceived by elementary school students on school life adjustment. It verifies the mediating effect of self-esteem between major variables and school life adjustment. Accordingly, data of 2,378 elementary school students from the 2nd round of the 2018 Korean Children s and Youth Panel Survey (KYCPS) were used. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 for descriptive statistics and correlation analysis, and verified using a structural equation model. First, there was a significant direct effect of the parental relationship on the adaptation to school life and no significant direct effect on self-esteem. Furthermore, self-esteem had a significant direct effect on school life. Second, the path from parenting attitude to self-esteem and parenting attitude to school life adaptation variables showed positive and significant direct effects, respectively. Third, a significant indirect effect mediated by self-esteem among school life adaptation variables in parenting attitude was established. This study is meaningful as it seeks to improve effective education and expand existing research by examining the relationship and mediating factors of students adaptation to school life through the variables of parental relationship, parenting attitude, and self-esteem perceived by elementary school students. Considering the importance of supporting psychological and emotional aspects to improve the self-esteem of elementary school students, we propose appropriate parental education and counseling support.
