This paper tried to analyze Biography and Picture of Yue Fei(岳飛,1103~1142) from “The Illustration For Five Moral Disciplines & Behavior Of Confucianism”(五倫行實圖), which was ordered and compiled by King Jeongjo in the late Joseon Dynasty. Yue Fei is a patriotic soldier of the Southern Song Dynasty and is a great man widely known even during the Joseon Dynasty. King Jeongjo revised the old version of painting and biography from the time of King Sejong. Among them, Yue Fei’s story of having four letters tattooed on his back, which means “to repay the grace of the country with all his loyalty” is expressed. These picture books were compiled to make peoples who did not know Chinese characters realize the ethics of Confucianism.
King Jeongjo recognized the problems of the two editions of the past, about the relationship between the biography and the painting of the characters in the book. In other words, the paintings of the old editions were drawn based on the contents of the biography, and several scenes were depicted according to the plot of the story, making it difficult for readers (people who do not know the Chinese) to understand and not fit the purpose of the edification. The revised version of the King Jeongjo period in the late Joseon Dynasty fits better with the theme than that of King Sejong, and the method of depicting the painting is very sophisticated and realistic. Therefore, this paper specifically compared and analyzed where the problems and errors of the old version appeared and how they were modified and supplemented in the revised version.
