This study examines the types and development of “Buinmo(婦人帽, millinery),” a Western-style hat for women that was introduced after Korea"s opening to foreign trade. Confucian norms in the late Joseon period forced women to cover their faces in public, but the influx of Western culture after the port opened gradually led to the disappearance of face-covering headwear for most Korean women, and the appearance of Western hats for some. The introduction of buinmo to Korea in the 1890s, particularly among the upper class and students studying abroad, led to its widespread adoption in the 1920s. During this period, media such as films influenced women"s fashion, leading to the popularity of hats. In the 1930s, with the widespread adoption of Western clothing, the variety of buinmo also increased. Not only modern girls but also female students and working women adopted Western attire, incorporating it into their daily lives. The wartime regime of the 1940s imposed restrictions on the wearing of buinmo, leading to a rise in practical clothing and a stagnation in fashion trends. This study aims to provide a detailed examination of the types of Western-style hats worn by Korean women during the modern period, a topic that has not been extensively researched. By organizing scattered information, this research seeks to trace the introduction and spread of buinmo in Korea. The findings are expected to enhance the understanding of women"s clothing culture during the modern period and aid in the historical research and reproduction of various types of buinmo.
