The purpose of this research is to examine the different ways in which embodied suffering has been represented in contemporary art since 2000 from an ontological perspective. The methods and content of the paper are divided into two parts. Chapter 2 draws on primary and secondary literature by Levinas, Henri, Jacquet, Holbrand and Pedersen to explore the theoretical basis of how embodied suffering mediates reflexive introspection in the discourse of flesh and body in French phenomenology to produce positivity out of the negativity of life, and the concept of the ontological turn as a positive agenda in anthropology. Chapter 3, the core of the paper, analyzes the significations of embodied suffering in relation to ten examples of artworks selected on the basis of the philosophical and anthropological ideas discussed above and divided into three types. First, Nanni, Kapoor and Garner, who represent the inorganic intangibility of flesh; second, Filomeno, Pape and Quinn, who make visible the illusion of the body’s disintegration; and third, Dieker, Lou, Glendinning and Schweizer, who explore the meaning of an unhealed wound. Contemporary art that represents embodied suffering offers viewers the opportunity to step out of their daily routines, to develop their sensitivity to the trials of others as their own, and to find ways to actively appropriate suffering. An ontological turn that uses suffering as a medium opens the way for us to question what it means to be human in the real world, freeing us from metaphysical preconceptions in search of transcendent truth. As a result, suffering allows us to break away from familiar semantic associations and deepen our thinking through self-reflection and reassessment of values from a new perspective. Suffering is a guide to realizing the importance of the physical body and an exercise in becoming accustomed to the tragedy inherent in the nature of life. As flesh and blood beings, we would do well to ask ourselves endlessly what the ethical implications of the suffering that accompanies the phenomenon of life should be in our shared world of existence.
