The lonely deaths of the elderly is one of the various emerging social problems as the population aging of our society is accelerating. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, cases of lonely deaths have increased significantly since 2019. In particular, as the number of lonely deaths increases, the importance of prevention increases as well. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose a smart wearable band design to prevent lonely deaths among senior citizens living alone in Korea. As for the research methods, first, we investigated the current situation of lonely deaths among the elderly living alone in Korea through a literature review. Second, we interviewed stakeholders related to the issue of lonely deaths in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, and analyzed case studies of related products and services. Third, based on the design direction and design concept derived from the stakeholder interview and case analysis, we propose a smart wearable band design and a related safety protection system concept. Smart wearable bands are used for the elderly living alone, mainly to prevent lonely deaths. It is usually used in link with a safety protection system, and if a senior citizen is in danger, it will automatically deliver the content of the threat to the safety protection system. In addition to preventing lonely deaths, it can also be used as a healthcare wearable band. The safety protection system is designed mainly for community center officials, so that they can detect danger in the homes of the elderly in the shortest time possible. Through the safety protection system, officials can immediately realize the daily situation of the elderly in their charge. As mentioned earlier, the lonely death of the elderly is an accelerating social issue. Hence, prevention work is utmost important as we might encounter unexpected consequences down the road if the neglection continues. We look forward for the research outcomes of this paper to be used as base data for preventing lonely deaths among the elderly.
