From the past to the present, art has been considered a symbol created and produced by humans. The concept of art and artistry seems to be defined according to the times and trends without being defined as an absolute truth to date. This study aims to examine the impact of advancing artificial intelligence AI-technology in the field of contemporary art and engage in a discourse on the essence and value of AI art. AI-generated music, literature, and artworks have brought a breath of fresh air to the public, yet among artists and art critics, there is an ongoing debate about whether AI-created works can be regarded as genuine art. I believe that this ongoing debate signifies not a mere event but rather a transitional discourse for a new paradigm in contemporary art. Walter Benjamin, in “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” defined the artistry of photography, a contentious subject of the time. Benjamin discussed whether works of art produced through technical reproduction could retain their value and meaning as art through the concept of ‘aura’. Originally, Benjamin’s argument was that technology-based reproduction could diminish the ‘aura’ or unique presence of an artwork. Interestingly, AI-generated artworks seem to deviate from this assertion. Instead of eroding the ‘aura,’ art created by AI presents a new form of presence referred to as the ‘digital aura.’ AI art represents a novel art form formed through the fusion of art and technology, offering a fresh perspective on the nature of art and the interaction between human and machine creativity. The way Benjamin approached photography as art in the age of technical reproduction bears a striking resemblance to the current discourse surrounding AI art. This paper seeks to explore the artistic value and meaning of currently controversial AI works, particularly by examining the birth of new art genres akin to photography’s acknowledgment as a genre and the advent of AI art through Benjamin’s concept of the ‘aura.’ In doing so, it aims to address the future direction of AI art and AI artists.
