The purpose of this research is to examine the <Da-eum-eot-ji> series published by [the Sinmun-gwan] in the children''s magazines 『Bulgeun Jeogori』 and 『Aideul Bo-i』 in the early 1910s. Its aim is to expand the research scope of these magazines, which have only been studied in the fields of literature, history, society, and media, by focusing on visual materials and presenting their cultural significance. The research method involves defining the meaning of the visual elements through content and image analysis, and investigating the cultural role they played. The comic series <Da-eum-eot-ji> in these magazines can be regarded as the first serialized comic in Korea. The publisher of the magazine, Choi Nam-seon, used the comic genre based on his experience studying in Japan, and it can be assumed that it was naturally influenced by Japanese comics. However, even within these limitations, this research analyzes the unique characteristics of <Da-eum-eot-ji> and presents its own special features that go beyond the imitative nature of Japanese comics. The visual characteristics seen in <Da-eum-eot-ji> include the use of various frames such as semicircles, circles, squares, and so on. Secondly, the emphasis on Korean elements can be observed, such as the names of characters and children wearing Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), as well as the background of the cuts. Thirdly, it shows the appearance of various characters and their archetypes. Fourthly, the active use of Western elements can be seen. These visual characteristics are appropriately combined with the contents of the comic, which are compressed into playfulness, education, and creativity. This paper proposes an alternative suggestion for the origin and research scope of Korean design history by examining the visual aspects of magazines published by the [Sinmun-gwan], which have been primarily focused on text research, and expands the scope of Korean modern history research.
