Kim Seung-ok’s novels from the 1960s sharply depict the relationship between individuals and society through the self-consciousness of isolated individuals. The individual in Kim Seung-ok’s novel can be said to be a being with a desire to become a ‘citizen’ in that he or she seeks to escape isolation. This paper examines Kim Seung-ok’s novels from the perspective of the formation of citizenship by focusing on the individual character of Kim Seung-ok’s novels, and based on this, proposes the direction of novel education to foster citizenship.
As pluralism is strengthened, discussions on citizenship are also changing their emphasis. In a pluralistic situation, the role of a citizen is defined as organizing plurality, that is, differences, and when applied to education, citizenship education can be defined as cultivating the internal capacity to deal with differences.
This paper is an attempt to read Kim Seung-ok’s novels 「The Strong Man」 and 「Seoul Winter, 1964」 from the perspective of citizenship. These two works depict the ego’s predicament caused by the social differences created in the 1960s and the struggle to resolve it. This paper reads 「The Strong Man」 as imagining a pluralistic order beyond shame, and 「Seoul Winter 1964」 as showing an attempt to realize mourning beyond hatred. This reading is meaningful in that it suggests the direction of novel education to foster citizenship.
